ALBERTA IS GROWING FAST AND SO IS THE DEMAND FOR NEW HOMES

At the Building Industry & Land Development Association Alberta (BILD Alberta), we believe the next generation is key to addressing the province’s skilled labour shortage. Residential construction plays a central role in Alberta’s economy. As our population expands, the need for skilled workers to build vibrant, livable communities has never been greater.

With many tradespeople nearing retirement, we need new talent—young Albertans ready to step into rewarding, long-term careers in residential construction. That’s where you come in.

BUILDING THE FUTURE: CAREERS IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION

Whether it’s framing, electrical work, cabinetry, or plumbing, residential construction offers diverse, hands-on opportunities to build not just homes, but also a future for yourself and your community. BILD Alberta, with support from the Government of Alberta – Jobs, Economy and Trades, is proud to help raise awareness of these essential roles. Our sector is often grouped together with other trades, but new home construction brings a unique and vital contribution to housing affordability and economic growth.

Put simply: more skilled workers means more homes, built faster, and at a lower cost.

UNDERSTANDING THE PATH: DESIGNATED TRADES & STAEA

Thanks to the Skilled Trades And Apprenticeship Education Act (STAEA)—which came into force in July 2022—there’s greater clarity about how trades are regulated in Alberta.

Many residential construction jobs, such as framing, drywalling, and flooring installation, are classified as non-restricted or designated trades without restricted activities. This means you can begin working in these trades without needing formal certification, an apprenticeship, or specific credentials. While they may not (yet) be designated under STAEA, these roles remain critical to the completion of every new home.
